EASTER MESSAGE

“Ako ang Muling Pagkabuhay at Buhay, wika ng Panginoon.  Ang sinumang sumasampalataya sa akin kahit siya ay namatay, muling mabubuhay.  At ang sinumang nabubuhay na sumasampalataya sa akin ay hindi mamamatay magpakailanman!”

There is this amusing story that I have read.  Isang araw, napansin ni San Pedro na maraming Filipino ang absent sa langit.  At sa kanyang pagtatanong at pag-uusisa, napag-alaman niya, na noong araw na iyon ay maraming Filipino ang nanaog magmuli sa lupa upang sumama sa Salubong at makipagsaya sa kani-kanilang bayan sa Pagdiriwang ng Pasko ng Muling Pagkabuhay!   This humorous tale truly captures the magnetic quality of our Easter rituals.  Ganoon ka-sikat at ka-popular ang tradisyong ito.  Tawag nati’y Salubong dito sa ka-Tagalogan, Pagsugat sa Cebu, Sabet sa Ilokos, Tonton sa Bicol at Abet-abet sa Pangasinan.

Sa ganap na alas-4, itong prusisyon na ito ay lumalabas sa Simbahan…at sa paghahati, kadalasan ay mga kalalakihan ay sumasama sa imahen ni Pagkabuhay at ang mga kababaihan naman ay sa Mahal na Birhen. Makatapos umikot sa kani-kaniyang rota, magtatagpo sila sa arko ng Pagsasalubungan.  Sino sa ating nakasasaksi nito, ang hindi masisiyahan sa pakikinig sa tula ng anghel at sa magandang awit ng pari at koro?  Sino ang hindi pangingilabutan sa pagbukas ng tila langit at sa pagpanaog ng batang anghel upang tanggalin ang belong itim na sumasagisag sa kalungkutan at pagluluksa sa imahen ng Inang Birhen Maria?  Sino ang hindi papalakpak sa tuwa kapag tumugtog na ang banda ng musiko, kasabay sa pagpapalipad ng mga kalapati habang ini-aakyat ng mga lobo ang belong tinanggal?!  At pagkatapos nito ay isinasagawa ang Banal na Misa and then ang pagbalik at pagluluklok sa Simbahan.  Walang kasing saya tayo magdiwang ng Pista ng Muling Pagkabuhay…at tama lang naman dahil…

Easter, I truly believe is the most important celebration in the Church Calendar; and without a doubt, the most important event in human history. Christmas, if not seen in the light of Easter could just have been like any ordinary birth of someone.  That which had happened that first Good Friday, would have been a great tragedy, if not for this unquestionably extra ordinary day called Easter.  This is the day…this is truly The Day unlike any other…The day that the Lord has made…and we? We will definitely forever rejoice and be glad in it.  Praise the Lord, for Christ has Risen! Praise the Lord!  Alleluia!

In this glorious day, we commemorate the rising of Jesus, our Good Lord from the dead…and by so doing, we can now all look at life differently.  We can now look at life not through our own eyes but through the eyes of our Savior, who has conquered death and has given us a new way of being.  He has overcome death and made eternal life available to us all.

Kung dati ang pananaw ay…ang lahat natatapos sa kamatayan.  Ngayon hindi na!  Because there is life after death.  Tunay ngang napakabuting balita nito, lalo’t higit sa panahon natin ngayon…kung saan dumaranas tayo ng Pandemya. Undeniably, we are now in a world so confused…isang mundo na hindi na malaman kung ano pa ang dapat gawin para matigil at matapos ang krisis na ito.  Isang mundong puro takot at pangamba na lang ang namamayani.  Isang mundong parang kamatayan ang siyang naghahari.  Well, my brothers and sisters, Easter reminds us all that despite of all the darkness in the world, evil does not have the last word.   The good news of Easter is Goodness triumphs.

Dito sa ating bansa ay may isang sikat na koponan sa basketball, ang Ginebra. And speaking of that famous Filipino Basketball Team.  If there is anything truly admirable sa kanila ay yung kanilang never say die attitude.  Turo kasi sa kanila ng coach nilang si Jaworski, “Boys, let’s do this! It’s never over ‘til it’s over!”  And really, most of the time, they have found this to be true.  The outcome of the game could be reversed suddenly at the dying seconds.

And this is precisely what happened to Jesus…ang akala ng lahat ay natapos na siya; noong siya ay namatay at inilibing. Ang inisip ng lahat ay sumapit na ang “The End” sa Kanyang istorya…yung pala, It’s not over yet!  For there is victory after seeming defeat!  There is resurrection after crucifixion! There is life after death!

Kaya nga, we can never say to anyone now, na hopeless ka na!  For us to say that to anyone, is like slamming the door in the face of our Good Lord…For in God, there will always be hope!      

Ipina-paunawa rin naman sa atin ng pangyayaring ito, na everything in this world passes away.  Nothing is permanent here…Reality is, eventually we all will have to die sometime, somehow, somewhere.  Our life here is just transitory.  Easter tells us that there is a future in store for us; there is a heaven we can all look forward to.  Kaya dasal ko ay, sa gitna ng kaguluhang dulot ng Pandemyang ito, may we never ignore the heavenly and eternal realities brought forth to us by the Resurrection of our Lord.  Our life ought to find its source; power and meaning in Him…who said…“Ako ang Muling Pagkabuhay at Buhay, wika ng Panginoon.  Ang sinumang sumasampalataya sa akin kahit sya ay namatay, muling mabubuhay.  At ang sinumang nabubuhay na sumasampalataya sa akin ay hindi mamamatay magpakailanman! 

Let us put our faith in Him and trust Him.  Let us continue to know Him and to love Him.   And no matter what happens to us and to the world, may we always proclaim that wonderful truth:  Jesus our Lord is Alive! Let us live our faith based on this truth that gives us hope, joy, and assurance of our final victory and eternal salvation.
